A lower price per token doesn’t guarantee a lower AI bill. What you pay depends on how many tokens a model uses to finish a task, including reasoning tokens you never see. In a benchmark comparison this month, one frontier model listed at 2.5 times less per token than a rival yet cost about 20% more per task. Measure cost per completed task on your own workflows before you set a budget.
On October 13, Google made Gemini 4 Argon broadly available through its paid API, AI Studio, its Antigravity development environment and eligible Gemini Enterprise subscriptions. VentureBeat reported that launch pricing was a limited-time $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. The Next Web puts the standard rate at $4 and $20.
On the sticker price alone, that looks cheap next to OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, which lists at $10 and $50 per million input and output tokens. At standard rates, Argon is 2.5 times cheaper per token.
Then Artificial Analysis ran both models on the same set of tasks. According to The Next Web’s summary, both scored 53 on its Intelligence Index. Argon used about 62,000 output tokens per task against about 27,000 for Astra. At the launch discount, Argon cost $1.99 per task versus $3.26 for Astra. At the standard rate, Argon’s cost rises to about $3.98, roughly 1.2 times Astra.
So the model that is 2.5 times cheaper per token ends up about 20% more expensive per task.
A caution: these are benchmark tasks, not business workflows. Your results will depend on your prompts, your data and how much checking your team does afterward. That’s why the benchmark is a useful warning and a poor forecast.
A token is a small chunk of text, often part of a word, that an AI model reads or writes. Providers bill input tokens (what you send) and output tokens (what the model generates) at different rates. Output usually costs more, commonly two to six times as much.
Reasoning models work through a problem before they answer. Those thinking tokens are billed at the output rate but usually hidden from the user, so a short answer can carry a bill for several hundred tokens nobody read. For Argon, input, thinking and output all share a single window of about 1,048,576 tokens, a reminder that thinking is part of the meter.
An AI agent doesn’t make one call. It plans, calls tools, checks results and tries again. The FinOps Foundation says reasoning and agentic workloads consume five to thirty times more tokens per task than the equivalent chat. It also points out the trap: unit prices per million tokens are falling across most providers, while total enterprise spend is rising. One survey summary report that 73% of organizations said their AI costs exceeded original projections, citing a 2026 FinOps Foundation survey of 1,192 practitioners.
Launch discounts are common. Budget at the standard rate and put a date on your calendar to re-test when the promotion changes. Check the provider’s current pricing page before you commit, because these figures move.
Many New Jersey organizations work in financial services, healthcare and life sciences, or supply chain and logistics. In those fields, an AI project is rarely approved by one person. Finance, compliance and security usually all weigh in, and a bill that doubles without a clear explanation draws questions from every one of them.
Cost control is also a security matter. Researchers now track denial-of-wallet attacks, where an agent is manipulated into running up usage, and they treat cost limits as a security control.
For small and mid-sized companies without a dedicated FinOps team, this is where an outside partner helps. Whether you hire IT consultants in New Jersey or build the skills in house, the goal is the same: know what one finished task costs before you scale it.
